Mark talks about his newly completed record - "Queens English"
Wow...so the new record is done. It's called "Queens English"
and I'm off to mastering with it this week (10/13). What can I say? -
The album's mostly a melancholy valentine to life in NYC (the outer-boroughs
to be exact) and is somewhat different than anything I've done in the
past. Two years in the making, it's been quite a tiring, energizing, depressing
and joyful ride all rolled into one (a bit like life really, no?) hopefully
making for some good music/art. It's also a very personal album for me
not only content-wise but also in the method by which it was created.
I played, recorded and mixed a good deal of the record myself w/ only
my loyal assistant, KP the cat, at my side. KP and I saw many late-night
sessions while the world slept, the hours crept and the drunkards wept.
Despite
the record being a somewhat solitary exercise it was also just as much
a collaborative effort with many, many musical friends, old and new, lending
their time and extraordinary talents - My "Pop Job"/"M$M"
homeB, Ron Zabrocki returned this go-around on a few tracks to play any
instrument that wasn't nailed down. Lee Alexander (Norah Jones) generously
played double bass. Morgan Taylor (Gustafer Yellowgold) and Cheri Leone
(Trouble Dolls) put down some backing vocals. John Lee (Michael Shelley)
played bass. Jacob Lawson (David Poe) arranged and played all the strings.
Michael Leonhart (Steely Dan) arranged/played most of the horn parts with
additional horn contributions coming from Rob Jost (Imogen Heap) and Eric
Biondo (TV on the Radio). Scott Klass and Tom Ward (The Davenports) played
piano and bass respectively and Angela Webster (Rhett Miller) played drums.
In
the end...well, I think this album could either be the best work I've
done or the biggest piece of sh*t ever...obviously I'm too close to it
and out of my mind to tell right now. I'm hopeful it's the former. I can
tell you, however, it's the most personal and honest thing I've put down
and I'm hoping you kind folks will enjoy and get something from it. Will
post some tracks to myspace or this site when I get the chance. I'm optimistic
for an early-mid 2009 release.
XO,
-mb
